PONI IN THE PRESS:

  Pieta in the flesh

There was electricity in the air. The instruments were placed in the middle of the hall. Two men marked the centre area with duct tape. A man quietly took off his clothes and lay down along a ladder on the floor. Little by little people appeared and started making sounds with their body and behaving like animals. The movements transformed. Suddenly it was clear the animals were changing into
humans that looked like clichés in the performance of pop stars, in the spirit of spinal tap. A lot of rock and roll started at that point. It
looked like masks of black tape were springing out of the human faces. Sexual gestures like licking the guitar neck. Men running around with their pants down around their heals, cables tangled around necks or covering the whole head.

Others were spitting colours. Sometimes you saw images that looked like stagings of famous paintings. Most of us are probably tired of the question: Is this really visual art? Maybe this is art but please let’s call it something else. Theatre or multimedia art. These are the borders on which Ragnar Kjartansson is working - visually schooled actor and musician with Trabant. Poni is a group of
performance artists, based in Belgium but seemingly on the fast track to "star universe". This is an impro-group but they work with images and rituals, perhaps not religious rituals, but rituals from rock culture which often have a presence of religion. Poni is a group of dancers, musicians and visual artists from a few countries e.g. from Iceland come the visual artist Gudni Gunnarsson and the dancer Erna Ómarsdóttir. They and Trabant put their powers together in the KLINK this weekend.

Magnificent time for the spectators. One of the audience sat beside me filled with enjoyment and shouted through the rock wall into my ear, while Frank Pay made a statue out of Kate McIntosh: "I have never seen such a spectacular profile. Hellenic beauty! Imagine this in 2000 year old marble. She is armed, with drumsticks taped all round her body. Like a statue of Aphrodite, Mars or Athena in the same face - barbarism and wisdom. Athena the engineer and the architect. Mars as the bully of Greek mythology. Or imagine Pieta by Michaelangelo with Jesus in her arms but this time "live" or in the flesh. But instead of Jesus there is sea green fender guitar,
sea green because I live on an island. Creation that opens the gates of heaven after arguing with the bouncer Peter Pan - the guy who
didn’t want to grow up. Michael Jackson is only an extra in that fantasy! There is the guitar that opens the gates of heaven". And he
went on "This vision I will love and miss until I die. I want to die because hereafter my life has no purpose because I have seen the
light through my own fist. Carried the hope, seen it fulfilled but not for me and not for you. The nature of the divine is that it never
goes further than the end of your own tie, so made-up politeness and dress codes have nothing to do with rudeness.

Finally it’s us that have to live, and it’s us that have to love, and for that you get 25 years to life". I thought Yes I think this is visual arts.
